  • ☯️Conoces el yin yoga?
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

  • Day 4 of the #AYYQChallenge with @accessibleyoga & @yogaquota. Today’s is * Backbends & the ** Media/Marketing of Yoga
    * Backbend of my choice today? The always super-duper, enjoyable, & multi-adaptable Cat-Cow (a.k.a. Bitilasana-Marjaryasana) - a great way of moving in & out of spinal flexion & extension, the back-bend piece (Cow) is usually 'doable' for even the stiffest of low-backs & indeed also for those with mid-back challenges. ^ Move as slow & fast, as small & gentle or as deep & strong as we like;
    ^ Practice this on All-Fours, in a Chair, standing against a wall with the hands flat at shoulder-height.
    ^ Even adapt other asana like Puppy Pose & make it a variant of Cat-Cow & ditto with a wide-armed finger-tipped low Cobra!
    Go you beautiful Cat-Cows 🐱🐮
    ** The Media/Marketing Of Yoga - can we market our classes in a way that showcases diversity/accessibility? Representation matters & shows us when we're welcome in a particular space.
    ^ Personally I have to date 100% steered away from any inclusion of myself (in asana or other shape or form) on both FB & IG. That's a personal choice & not a criticism of others choices. People can jump to incorrect or unjust conclusions based on imagery alone - "oh if he/she/they (the teacher) is black/white, old/young, abled-bodied/not, straight/gay/other, tall/small, slim/bigger etc" then the class is going to be "X" or the other people in class will be "Y" & so on. ^ It's REALLY hard to find (free/paid) stock images that are truly inclusive. I'd rather not 'exclude' many than only 'include' some (hmmm, new challenge ahead @jivana108?). ^ Even for this Challenge, I had to use the 'typical' 'SWF' imagery for the asana each day. Today I thought SOD THAT! I'd rather use animals (& Mother Nature as my feed shows!) than perpetuate the Mass Media SWF baloney any bit more than I have to... 🌈💪🏼

  • Debunking the myth that yoga in the West is for flexible ladies sporting g-strings. •

    Also, here debunking the myth that men have stiff hips. • ‘The reason for wanting to practise yoga or your reason for currently practising yoga is not important. The important thing is that you have overcome previous prejudices and postponements to try yoga for yourself. You have overcome the biggest obstacle.’ Swami Satyananda Saraswati •

    With a regular practice all perceived limitations are invalidated. It’s simply a matter of trying and becoming more open to new experiences. •

    These experiences then stimulate and strengthen neural networks,
    possibly building new networks and brain matter, positive neuralplasticity.• Want to shift habits ? Want to broaden perception and increase perspective? Want to release stiff hips? Want to remain cognitively fluid and mentally limber as you age? •

    Ultimately, neuroplasticity enables us to appropriately respond, adapt and evolve through experiences. •

    We don’t need to be creatures of habit, stuck in old stories, stereotypes with limited false perceptions. •

    Come try for yourself, get over postponements, AWAKE Yoga Studio @bucfitnessclub

  • TRANSFORMATION || RESISTANCE
    Is transformation possible without some form of initial resistance? I was listening to @Oprah's @supersoul podcast ❤ with #stevenpressfield and the conversation of resistance we all encounter when we are trying to change & now I am obsessed with finding my places of resistance. Whenever we are pushing to become the best version of ourselves in some form, we have resistance. The nagging voice saying "you can't do that" or "that idea is crazy, it is impossible", but it's on us to move beyond the resistance and dive head first into the work. To break up the pattern of behaviors, thoughts, limiting beliefs that hold us back from a full transformation of realizing our highest self. It isn't easy work, but is anything worth having ever really easy? When we take the time and effort to meditate you can take your resistance head on, examine WHY you're resisting and see that you are not those thoughts and TRANSFORM.

  • anxiety is a tricky thing. I sometimes get anxiety about my anxiety 🤦🏼‍♀️⠀

    although at first blush I wouldn’t call myself an anxious person, I’m beginning to acknowledge its lurking presence in my life. I feel it most in the mornings, as the day begins to get underway. there is so much I want to work on, learn about, and accomplish that I feel overwhelmed and at a loss because there are simply not enough hours in the day for what I feel I want to / need to do in order to get where I want to be. ⠀

    this often leads to me being frustrated with myself because what an incredibly annoying first world problem to have anxiety over the opportunity in front you 🙄 but here we are 🤷🏼‍♀️ ⠀

    I’m working on it, 1) by acknowledging it, 2) by allowing myself some grace and knowing it’s ok to feel this way even if it seems a bit ridiculous, and 3) by incorporating mindfulness techniques into my routine that help bring me back to a clear & centered mind (yoga, breath work, journaling)⠀

    I share this because there is so much life that happens beyond these squares. we are all working through our own challenges; we are all on our own journey. ⠀
