  • The Starting Line follow up their 2002 debut, with the 2005 follow up: "Based On A True Story". Kenny Vasoli is an interesting beast. The bass player from Philadelphia shows amazing potential at times, both lyrically, and vocally. Other times his lyrics are painfully generic and basic. Whenever this occurs he tries to cover it up with his singing talent (which there is a plethora of) and sometimes it works, more often it does not. Around 3 tracks into this record, I came to the realization that "The Starting Line" are being made into a PRODUCT, not a BAND, by their producers, and the ongoing power struggle between Vasoli wanting to write music unique to him, versus the studio's desire to appeal more to a mainstream audience, results in a record that while being a SLIGHT (and I cannot stress that word enough) improvement, bears a lot of similar issues to their 2002 effort. The writing is more mature, which is a step in the right direction, but the disconnect between vocals and instrumentals is still evident, I would say even moreso in this album. Vasoli has an odd delivery, which is fine, he can clearly sing. However his writing doesn't gel with his vocal talent, meaning a lot of choruses and verses have odd deliveries, and annunciations. "The Starting Line" are a very relatable band at their core, unfortunately their self aware songs often come across more cheesy than genuine. Looking back, they're an odd little curio within the genre.
HIT'S INCLUDE: BEDROOM TALK, SUPRISE SUPRISE, and THE LIST
