- The Red Pyramid was Egypt’s greatest success. The infamous Giza pyramids which enchant the world were simply copied off of the original here. The Red Pyramid is within view of Giza, but while thousands of people come every year for the great Giza Pyramids, but this site is rarely visited by tourists. The King Sneferu, having seen the great Imhotep’s step Pyramid wanted a grandiose tomb of his own. The problem was the first pyramid collapsed mid construction. The Bent Pyramid then had to be altered as it showed signs of collapse but finally on the third try after a construction period of 10-17 years, the first smooth sided ancient pyramid was built. It’s construction was so successful the outer coating remained almost entirely intact for 3000 years before it was torn down to build new buildings in Cairo.
