NEW DELHI: Shares of India’s Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd slumped over 13 percent on Friday to near six-year low, after a media report of a complaint by a whistleblower raised fresh concerns on the drugmaker’s corporate governance.
The complaint, sent to the capital market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), is the second in over a month, according to the report by Moneylife magazine.
The whistleblower complaint alleges that an Indian pharmaceutical manufacturer Aditya Medisales Ltd had transactions with Suraksha Realty, controlled by Sun Pharma’s co-promoter, Sudhir Valia, the report stated.
The transactions took place between 2014 and 2017, and were worth over 58 billion rupees ($814.65 million), it added.
A whistleblower had approached SEBI late last year with a document alleging various irregularities by Sun Pharma, its promoter Dilip Shanghvi and others.
Sun Pharma did not immediately respond to a Reuters request seeking comment.
Shares of the country’s largest drugmaker by market value recorded their biggest intra-day percentage drop since May 29, 2017.
Over 31.4 million shares changed hands as of 0453 GMT, around 2.7 times Sun’s 30-day trading volume average of 11.7 million shares.
Earlier this month, Sun Pharma had recalled muscle relaxtant vecuronium bromide for injection due to the presence of glass.

  • Saving a river: Pollution in India’s holy Ganges makes it toxic

NEW DELHI: The Ganges river, holy to most Indians, flows from the western Himalayas down to the Bay of Bengal through crowded cities, industrial hubs and some of the most populated areas in the world.
The river begins as pristine, clear waters in the icy heights of the tallest mountain range in the world. But pollution, untreated sewage and use by hundreds of millions of people transform parts of it into toxic sludge by the time it reaches the sea, about 2,525 kilometres downstream.

Personified by Hindus as the goddess Ganga, the river is the site of thousands of cremations and ash scatterings every day. The Hindu nationalist government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a nearly $3 billion five-year plan to clean up the river by 2020, but Reuters found last year that only a tenth of the funds had been used in the first two years of the project.
A Reuters team that investigated the state of the holy river has compiled data and photographs to portray its condition.
Devotees take a holy dip at Sangam, the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers, during “Kumbh Mela”, or the Pitcher Festival, in Prayagraj, previously known as Allahabad, In ...

  • Sandra Bullock’s ‘Bird Box’ draws 80 million viewers

LOS ANGELES: Netflix Inc on Thursday said more than 80 million member households will have watched its thriller movie “Bird Box” in its first four weeks, but the streaming giant gave no viewing data for Oscar hopeful “Roma.”
“Bird Box,” starring Sandra Bullock and set in a post-apocalyptic society where survivors must wear blindfolds, was released on Netflix on Dec. 21 and triggered a viral sensation when fans posted their own blindfolded “Bird Box Challenges” on social media.
Netflix does not routinely release viewing data for its movies and television series as traditional networks and film studios do. But it gave some limited figures in its fourth-quarter earnings report on Thursday, in which it reported slightly lower-than-expected quarterly revenues.
Netflix said in a statement that with movies like “Roma,” from Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron, “we are beginning to have our original movie offering mirror the success of our series.”
However, it gave no audience figures for “Roma,” which won two Golden Globes earlier in January and is expected to be Oscar-nominated next week.
Netflix said other recent audience favorites included romantic television thriller series “You” and British young adult comedy series “Sex Education,” both of which are expected to be watched by more than 40 million member households in their first four weeks.
No figures were released for other high-profile content, including the interactive movie “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” and the Jennifer Aniston comedy “Dumplin’.”

  • Federer serves up Fritz blitz to reach last 16

Roger Federer celebrated his 100th match at the Australian Open on Friday by giving young American Taylor Fritz a centre court schooling to reach the last 16 and set up a mouthwatering clash with ‘Next Gen’ champion Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Chasing a record seventh Melbourne title and his third in succession, the 37-year-old Swiss has been in ominous form at the year’s first Grand Slam and his 6-2 7-5 6-2 masterclass at Rod Laver Arena was another warning to the Tour’s upstarts.
Fritz, 21, was meant to offer Federer a meaningful test with his prodigious serve and powerful ground-strokes but was instead sent packing after less than 90 minutes.
Third seed Federer tied the American in knots with a sumptuous array of drop shots, angled volleys and winners conjured seemingly at will from behind the baseline.

Fans hoping for change at the top of men’s tennis will look to Greek trailblazer Tsitsipas to give Federer a better shake.
The shaggy-haired 20-year-old, who capped a breakout season by claiming the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan in December, has ridden a wave of support from Melbourne’s huge Greek community at the tournament.
Federer has his own army of fans at Melbourne Park, however, and they hung on his every word as he delivered words of encouragement to the young pretenders seeking to knock him off the perch.
“They’re doing great, what do you want me to tell you?” he told Jim Courier in his on-court interview.
“We all want them to win the big stuff but it just takes time … I’m still ...
