  • I could never be katsuDONE 🐷 !!!
Why do some Japanese kids eat this before exams?
    DEETS:⠀
    📍Tokyo, Japan 🇯🇵 ⠀
Coming in from the cold rain to a self-service kiosk-run cozy restaurant, hubby, and I sat down to this katsudon.
🏆The restaurant name was "Rice Place" ("Machikado ya" : "street corner")... The stylized title font had a little triangular shape echoing it's meaning.⠀
🏆 It was a teishoku restaurant (serves set meals.)
🏆 Katsudon (カツ丼) is a pork cutlet over a bowl of rice.
🏆 “Katsudon” is “katsu” (short for “tonkatsu”/pork cutlet) + “don” (short for “donburi”/bowl).
🏆 Did you know sports teams often eat katsu before competitions and students before exams because another meaning for “katsu” is “VICTORIOUS!!” 🏆🥇💯 ⠀

Don't let its common name - piss alley - put you off! Omoide Yokocho, literally translating to "memory alleys", promises visitors just that - a glimpse into Japan's past. 🏮 Swipe left ⬅️
    .
    .
Packed with over 80 small Izakayas (Japanese bars) and Yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) stalls that can hardly fit 10 customers at once, the narrow alleys of Omoide Yokocho are popular for cheap drinks and snacks after work. 🍶🍡
    .
    .
Dimly lit with Japanese lanterns and filled with smoke emanating from the Yakitori grills, walking through these winding lanes is by itself an unmatchable experience! 🔝💯
    .
    .
Also, welcome to our Japan series! 🇯🇵🎎😃 Keep an eye out for our stories as we will be posting most of the details about our trip there! 👀

  • The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is one of Kyoto’s top sights and for good reason: standing amid these soaring stalks of bamboo is like being in another world.

It's not just tranquil visually but also aurally. The bamboo grove is beloved for its distinct rustling sound, so much that Japan's Ministry of Environment included it on its list of "100 Soundscapes of Japan."
