  • Happy Wednesday! I’m still not feeling quite ready to do some higher intensity exercise after being run down with a cold since Saturday 😪 Definitely felt as though everything caught up with me as soon as I stopped! Knowing when to listen to your body and recover really is so important - something I’ve never been very good at!
    But this time I’ve put things into perspective and focused on lots of other things that are important to me and actually enjoying the time off - like spending a cosy morning reading for a couple of hours at @coffeelabuk ☕ Bliss!
    Reducing exercise won’t change anything in the grand scheme of things! So if you need the time off, prioritise your health and wellbeing and take it 🙏🏻

  • I remember going to the gym for the first time at the age of 15 with the intention of getting big and strong. Unfortunately my
    bank of known free weight exercises was limited to exercises such as biceps curls and tricep extensions. Sadly, I didn’t see any change. 😢

    My problem was that I thought that performing these isolation exercises would cause great substantial change to my strength. I needed to focus more on compound movements.

    Do you understand the terms compound and isolation? 🤔 🔶
    A compound exercise will require action from many muscle groups across multiple joints. This is demonstrated by the squat where I’ve highlighted the 3 joints being utilised - ankle, knee and hip. 🏋🏻‍♂️

    An isolation exercise requires work from just one muscle group across one joint only. In the bicep curl, we are focusing on only the biceps and ensuring to hinge through just the elbow. 💪🏻

    Compound exercises will have the largest impact on your strength levels and therefore the foundation of every strength training program should be compound exercises. Isolation exercises should be supplementary to your compound lifts, iron out any weakness and overall facilitate better performance with your compound lifts.
