  • France // N°11 // Eiffel Tower
    .
From most vantages in the city, you can see the Eiffel Tower. Not only is it the most universally-recognized symbol of Paris (and perhaps all of France), but it is a beacon; a waypoint for any newcomer who loses themselves or their bearings in the city of light.
    .
Having booked tickets to the very top months in advance, I was excited to go up in the tower. As time wore on, however, I could tell things were less than ideal: thick fog rolled in, the sun got lower and lower in the sky, darkening the surroundings, and—for the first time in my 28 years—a bird pooped directly in my right eye.
    .
After much waiting and anticipation, my family and I took the diagonal elevator up to the ‘mid level’ and surveyed the city. It was somewhat foggy, but details in the distance appeared as shops turned on their lights for the evening. Making haste, I took the final elevator to the very top, where a thick grey blanket of fog was waiting. Blinded to the normally marvelous view, my attention was instead drawn to the tower itself: the thousands of black rivets holding it together, the dizzying lattice of criss-crossed ironwork, and the genius of engineering holding the entire thing together.
    .
I took in the experience, downed an overpriced flute of champagne to celebrate my visit, and headed back down.
    .
On the ground, my family disappeared to the comfort of the hotel, and I soon found myself on my own, walking around Paris in the mist and the rain. Amongst the tungsten reflections of street lamps and storefronts, I had to pause and marvel at how this wondrous city made a normally dreary, mundane experience into a completely enchanting one. I was reminded of the coda of Midnight in Paris, one of my favorites films, and how true it proved to be.
    .
Paris, at night, in the rain. Could there be anything better?

  • Sanjally Jobarteh learned to play the kora from his father, who learned to play it from his father. A member of a Gambian griot family, his ease in playing was apparent. His fast-paced fingers ran over the 21 strings like he’d done it a million times before. But what I loved most was the smile he had most of the time he played. He was having fun and I couldn’t help but smile back. @sanjallyjobarteh thank you for such a joyous and beautiful concert. It was a beautiful gift of a Friday night. #music #kora #griot #thegambia #gambian #musica #nairobi #culture #kenya #seetheworld
