  • I often think of Florence Cathedral to look inwards for inspiration as an artist when I feel meaningless, as the incredible and internationally recognised artwork shocked me. For alongside it being one of the largest buildings since the fall of Rome, a massive bronze dome interior that was built without scaffolding in 1296 by Giotto, the Tuscan gothic structure, the intricately detailed interior, there was ANOTHER interesting detail - The exterior (façade) carvings (reliefs) of the Cathedral.
Reliefs in the lower part of the façade depict the creation of man. Then as we get higher to the heavens, there are reliefs of the 7 planets that they knew of at the time, starting with Jupiter. After these planets, there are activities such as medicine, weaving, and other inventors with technical scientific endeavours. After this there are patriarchs, prophets and kings. Finally at the top, closest to the heavens, they placed the artists, sculptors and musicians. “Why?” everyone asked our tour guide. I asked myself this, also. We were told, that over the 2 centuries it took to build this enormous cathedral, that it was unanimous by the people that these activities (art and music) would bring human civilisation together, and so it was of the highest power, and should be placed closest to the heavens. Funnily, our entire group was from different countries from all around the world, as most were. As we all looked at each other (knowing we’d all come from so far, to witness this incredible artwork together) we fell silent and let the massive cathedrals beauty sink in.
